Calling it a landmark moment, Surinder Verma says India’s rise past Japan reflects years of reforms, policy stability, infrastructure push and decisive leadership under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

India has ushered in 2026 with a significant economic milestone, overtaking Japan to become the world’s fourth-largest economy. Reacting to this development, senior journalist Surinder Verma lauded the Modi-led central government for steering the country toward sustained economic growth and global prominence.
Verma said the achievement is the outcome of a long-term and reform-oriented approach rather than a short-term gain. He noted that India’s climb in global economic rankings reflects consistent policymaking, administrative clarity and strong political will demonstrated over the years.
According to him, focused efforts on expanding infrastructure, strengthening the manufacturing sector, accelerating digitalisation and maintaining macroeconomic stability have played a key role in reinforcing India’s economic fundamentals. These measures, Verma added, have enabled the country to sustain growth even amid global economic uncertainties.
“This is not merely a statistical achievement. Becoming the world’s fourth-largest economy validates the government’s economic roadmap and the Prime Minister’s decisive leadership. Such progress is possible only with continuity in reforms and the courage to take difficult but necessary decisions,” Verma remarked.
With this development, India now stands behind only the United States, China and Germany in terms of nominal GDP. Verma emphasised that beyond rankings, the milestone highlights India’s growing credibility and influence on the global economic stage.
As the new year begins, he described the achievement as a boost to national confidence and a clear signal of India’s steady march toward becoming a leading global economic power.
