Maulana Azad National Urdu University Holds Interactive Session to Promote Road Safety Awareness Among Journalism Students

In an effort to blend classroom learning with community-oriented communication, the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), today organized an interactive session on Road Safety Awareness.

The session encouraged students to perceive road safety as more than traffic discipline — as a critical matter of public health, civic duty, and ethical storytelling. Faculty members, students, and guest speakers discussed ways media professionals can advocate safe mobility through journalism, social media, and community outreach.

Prof. Mohammad Fariyad, Dean, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, said that communication students play an essential role in turning data into awareness. “When students learn to frame stories around social responsibility, like road safety, they not only inform audiences but also save lives,” he remarked.

Announcing a new initiative, Prof. Ehtesham Ahmad Khan, Head of the Department, said the department will establish a dedicated Road Safety Resource Hub on its website.

Speaking on health aspects, Dr. Syed Hubbe Ali, Health Specialist, UNICEF India Country Office, noted that road traffic injuries are one of the leading causes of death among children and adolescents aged 5–19 years in India. “Road crashes are not only a transportation issue—they are a major but under-recognized health burden. We must strengthen trauma care systems, empower communities with first-response knowledge, and ensure that child safety remains central to all mobility planning,” he said.

The discussion concluded with calls for safer school zones, slower speeds, and regular use of helmets and seatbelts. Students actively participated in the discussion, expressing interest in producing awareness features and digital campaigns under faculty mentorship.
