PM Modi Unveils Vizhinjam Port in Kerala, Boosting India’s Maritime Ambitions
May 2, 2025
Today, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, which is a major step forward for India’s maritime infrastructure. The seaport was developed by Adani Ports and SEZ Ltd. and is a deep-water transshipment port, which will help India become a stronger player in global shipping and trade.
Strategic Location and Advanced Infrastructure
Located just outside Thiruvananthapuram, Vizhijam port has a natural depth of 24 meters, which makes it possible for the largest container ships in operation to call there. It is located just 10 nautical miles from the east-west shipping corridor; this means it is ideally placed to be one of the major global hubs for maritime traffic. A description of the port infrastructure includes an 800-meter container berth and modern equipment for the shippers to use when discharging inbound cargo.

Economic Impact and Future Prospects
The inauguration of the Vizhinjam port is bound to greatly increase India’s maritime trade, alleviating dependence on container transshipment hubs located in neighboring countries. With an intention to handle up to 75% of India’s container transshipment needs when fully in operation, the port is expected to, before long, create huge economic knock-ons and jobs in the region.
Public-Private Partnership Model
The Vizhinjam project is an example of a successful partnership by the Kerala government, the central government, and the port and infrastructure leader Adani Ports, all of whom will contribute to the project. This partnership has successfully mobilized the necessary resources and expertise to carry out the type of infrastructure project of this magnitude.
The development of the Vizhinjam International Seaport marks an exciting milestone for India’s maritime system. With additional port capacity, enhanced connectivity, and improvements in efficiency, it will ultimately become an integral part of India’s development, economic growth, and global trade and transportation systems.
