India and Pakistan Agree to Ceasefire, U.S. Plays Crucial Mediator Role

Trump announces breakthrough as U.S. diplomats engage both sides; India issues stern warning against terrorism

May 10, 2025 | New Delhi

Amid rising tensions between India and Pakistan, former U.S. President Donald J. Trump has made a significant announcement, claiming that both nations have agreed to a full and immediate ceasefire. The agreement, according to Trump, was the result of overnight talks mediated by the United States.

Posting on Truth Social and cross-sharing the statement on X (formerly Twitter), Trump credited the breakthrough to sustained diplomatic efforts by the U.S., saying:

“After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both countries on using common sense and great intelligence.”

India Issues Stern Warning on Terrorism

In a related development, the Government of India has made it clear that any future terrorist attack on Indian soil will be considered an “Act of War.” The statement underlines India’s resolve to respond with full military force if provoked, signaling a shift towards a more aggressive posture in national defense.

U.S. State Department Confirms Active Mediation

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio confirmed the ceasefire agreement and the broader diplomatic efforts undertaken by American leadership. He revealed that, over the past 48 hours, he and Vice President J.D. Vance held direct talks with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Pakistani Army Chief General Asim Munir, and other key officials.

“I’m pleased to share that both nations have agreed to meet at a neutral location for comprehensive dialogue,” Rubio stated.

Pakistan Confirms Ceasefire Agreement

Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar also confirmed the ceasefire in a statement shared on X, emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to peace:

“India and Pakistan have agreed to an immediate ceasefire. Pakistan remains committed to regional peace and security, provided its sovereignty and territorial integrity are respected.”

Ceasefire Follows Heightened Military Tensions

The ceasefire comes in the wake of “Operation Sindoor,” an Indian military strike reportedly targeting terrorist camps inside Pakistan on May 7. Pakistan allegedly responded with attempts to target 15 Indian cities, significantly escalating regional tensions. The U.S. promptly urged both sides to resume dialogue and de-escalate.

Background: A History of U.S. Involvement

This is not the first time the U.S. has offered to mediate between India and Pakistan. Earlier, U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce had stated that the United States is open to facilitating dialogue between the two countries to maintain stability in South Asia. Secretary Rubio had also encouraged both sides to explore peaceful solutions to ongoing disputes.

Awaiting Official Response from India

While the international community watches closely, an official statement from the Indian government regarding the ceasefire announcement is still awaited. Nevertheless, the recent developments reaffirm the influential role global powers continue to play in ensuring peace and stability in the South Asian region.
