Gunmen open fire on non-local tourists in one of the most devastating attacks in recent times; TRF takes responsibility.
April 23, 2025
A horrific terrorist attack took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, a popular tourist destination, on April 22, 2025, killing at least 28 and injuring more than 20 people. The terrorists targeted tourists in the Baisaran meadow, and the attack has been condemned widely throughout India and internationally. Authorities have begun a massive manhunt, and investigations are being conducted into the attack.
Details of the Attack
The approximate time of the incident was around 2:50 PM, when 4 to 6 militants opened fire on tourists who were gathered at Baisaran. Eyewitnesses described the attackers as attired in combat-style clothing and impersonating police officers. They asked for the people’s names and demanded that they recite Islamic verses. Non-Muslim males who did not recite the Muslim verses were shot at close range. The Resistance Front (TRF), associated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, eventually took responsibility. The TRF explained they were opposed to the Indian government’s settlement policy in this area and the demographic change an influx of non-Muslims would have on Kashmir.

Government and Security Response
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the assault and vowed that the culprits will be prevailed upon. He declared that he would not be going abroad on a diplomatic visit, to oversee national security. Union Home Minister Amit Shah travelled to Pahalgam (in the Kashmir region of India), visited relatives of survivors, and assured reparation for families of survivors. Security across Jammu and Kashmir was enhanced with an increase in both stationed armed presence and surveillance.
Global Reaction
Global leaders conveyed solidarity with India. US president Joe Biden and Russian president Vladimir Putin denounced the attack as “a heinous act of terrorism.” The United Nations and the European Union also strongly supported India and its fight against terror.
Casualties and Aftermath
The attack killed Indian Navy officer Lt. Vinay Narwal, who was on his honeymoon; his wife survived. While the nation mourns, the attack has brought back issues of security in Kashmir and the ongoing threat from terrorist groups.
