The IPL 2025 match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals, at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamshala, scheduled for May 8, was suddenly called off over increasing fears of security following Pakistan’s attacks on various locations in India. The incident led to an evacuation of players and spectators from the situation and a further examination of the safety of sporting events amidst increasing geopolitical instability.
Match Disruption and Evacuation
The game was stopped at 10.1 overs, with Punjab Kings on 122 for 1, after one of the towers went off. What seemed to be a minor technical problem became serious when two more towers went off, resulting in officials deciding to evacuate the stadium. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed the match abandonment and organized a special train to take the players and officials from Dharamshala to Delhi via the nearest Una railway station.

Tensions Escalate Between India and Pakistan
These abrupt cancellations and reschedulings of IPL matches have happened at a time of escalation between India and Pakistan. On April 22, India conducted retaliatory strikes in Pakistan in the wake of a deadly attack on Hindu tourists visiting Indian Kashmir. In response, Pakistan claimed they shot down 25 Indian drones. The changes in the IPL this past week come during an escalation of conflict that has seen the closure of numerous airports in Northern India along with the stoppage of civilian and commercial operations.
