Elon Musk Says DOGE Will Thrive Without Him, likens Himself to Buddha

Tesla CEO Shares Vision for DOGE’s Future and His Reduced Role Amid Efforts to Cut Government Spending

2 May , 2025

During a recent interview, Tesla CEO Elon Musk stated that he believes the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will succeed even without him, making an unexpected comparison to Buddhism. Asked who would direct DOGE if he were gone, Musk replied, “Is Buddha necessary for Buddhism?” He indicated that, as with Buddhism, DOGE doesn’t need one person to lead it in order to carry out its purpose.

Musk went on to say that DOGE, which works to reduce federal expenditures, would carry on regardless of his direct participation. “Was Buddhism not more potent after Buddha died?” he argued, pointing to the department’s purpose and vision instead of his own role in its functioning.

DOGE, which has already saved around $160 billion in government expenditures and aims to achieve $1 trillion in savings by 2026, is functioning as a volunteer organization. Musk admitted that while some essential employees were “accidentally laid off” in workforce cuts, the department will continue to move ahead. “Some will remain, some won’t,” he stated regarding DOGE’s future personnel, indicating that the progress of the department is not dependent on individuals.

Though reduced in role, Musk confirmed that he would continue to provide one to two days a week to DOGE as he attended to his other ventures. His term as a special government employee runs through May 30, but Musk has committed to serving the department as long as President Trump wants him.
With his changed priorities, Musk guaranteed that DOGE not only won’t fall behind but is likely to pick up pace even further ahead.
