Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), one of India’s most prestigious institutions in commerce and economics education, formally inaugurated its centenary celebrations with a Curtain Raiser ceremony at its North Campus on Friday. The landmark event brought together senior academicians, policymakers, and eminent alumni, underscoring SRCC’s enduring contribution to India’s economic and institutional development.

Marking the beginning of its 100th year (1926–2026), SRCC used the occasion to reflect on a legacy closely intertwined with India’s economic evolution. The centenary roadmap unveiled a year-long series of academic conferences, policy dialogues, alumni engagements, and international collaborations aimed at strengthening the institution’s relevance in a rapidly transforming global economy.

The ceremony was presided over by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Delhi, Prof. Yogesh Singh, who attended as the Chief Guest, along with Mr. Ajay S. Shriram, Chairman of the SRCC Governing Body. The programme opened with a floral tribute to Sir Shri Ram, the visionary industrialist who founded the institution in 1920 as The Commercial School, laying the foundation for indigenous business and economic education.

A commemorative coffee table book titled Timeless Frames was also released, capturing SRCC’s journey from its early days in Daryaganj to its emergence as a globally recognised academic institution.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Yogesh Singh described SRCC as a globally respected academic brand whose contribution extends far beyond rankings. He said that over a century, the college has played a defining role in shaping institutions, nurturing generations, and influencing the nation’s progress. Referring to India’s recent rise as the world’s fourth-largest economy, he noted that institutions like SRCC have been instrumental in producing economists, entrepreneurs, administrators, and policymakers who drive national growth.

He urged the college to focus its next phase on entrepreneurship, business incubation, artificial intelligence, and digital finance, emphasizing that future leaders must be creators of enterprises and custodians of ethical governance.

In his address, Mr. Ajay S. Shriram said the centenary curtain raiser was both a moment of introspection and a blueprint for the future. Tracing SRCC’s journey from modest beginnings to national prominence, he highlighted the collective contribution of faculty, students, staff, and alumni. He said the institution would prioritise academic excellence, research, AI-enabled learning, sustainability, inclusion, and deeper alumni engagement in the years ahead.

Welcoming the guests, SRCC Principal Prof. Simrit Kaur said the centenary celebrations represent a shared achievement of generations associated with the institution. She reaffirmed SRCC’s commitment to nurturing socially responsible leaders grounded in ethics, sustainability, and national service.

The event witnessed the presence of several distinguished alumni and well-wishers. Sangeeta Jaitley, wife of late former Union Minister Arun Jaitley, recalled the profound influence SRCC had on his formative years and public life. Former Supreme Court judge Justice A.K. Sikri, FDCI Chairman Sunit Sethi, industrialist Sminu Jindal, former Union Minister Vijay Goel, and entrepreneur Neeraj Ghei also shared reflections on the institution’s transformative role in their personal and professional journeys.

The ceremony concluded with the illumination of the historic campus, symbolising the beginning of SRCC’s next century, followed by a cultural presentation featuring a Kathak–Bharatanatyam jugalbandi and musical tributes reflecting the institution’s journey through time.
